Monday 16th April, 2018- There is a new offer being put forward by the government that will hopefully result in the Antigua Barbuda Public Service Association (ABPSA) finding favour with it.
Head of Government, Prime Minister Gaston Browne revealed at the weekend they are now willing to increase by a month the back pay to qualified public sector workers.
In his budget presentation, the prime minister offered back pay in the amount of a month’s salary tax free, which would erase all other back pay obligations government has to its employees. But the ABPSA said the one month salary is inadequate and countered with a three month salary payment. Last week, they pushed the envelope further, demanding that half of the three month payment they are demanding be paid out by Labour Day next month.
Speaking on the Browne and Browne show at the weekend, Prime Minister Gaston Browne, says there is a new offer on the table, expressing hope that good sense will prevail and that an agreement will be reached.
The prime minister says he accepts that unions must vigorously defend the interest of their members, but he added that the demands are sometimes impracticable.
