Friday 13th April, 2018 – The Throne speech delivered to a joint sitting of Parliament today marked the opening of the parliamentary term following last month’s general elections, with great emphasis placed on the re-building of Barbuda.
In his 15 page-address to legislators of both houses entitled “Expanding our wealth, Rebuilding our nation together”, Governor General Sir Rodney Williams said government will do all in its power to restore Barbuda through assistance from the international community and friends, so that the residents there who were displaced by Hurricane Irma last year will be able to return to their homes. But Sir Rodney stated that the stark reality is that it may be impossible for those whose homes were destroyed to receive new dwellings. But provisions will be made for them to re-build.
Barbuda, Sir Rodney said is being positioned to become economically self sufficient, which will result in the sister isle being less dependent on the Treasury.
