Thursday 29th April, 2018 – With the start of the 2018 hurricane season three months away, government has begun making preparations by creating a fund, the proceeds of which will be used to carry out work in key areas.
While an amount is yet to be determined, the fund will be utilized for the cleaning of drains, the removal of overhanging branches from electricity and telephone wires and the provision of resources to the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS).
Cabinet spokesman, Minister Melford Nicholas says focus is being placed on the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) and the need for capacity building, which will determine the level of response from the organization in emergency situations.
Additionally, the HAPI program which involves prison inmates and allows for indigent owners of vulnerable homes to have their dwelling places renovated, will be strengthened.
The Cabinet spokesman noted that the construction of hurricane shelters to withstand hurricane forces will also be addressed.
