Wednesday 21st February, 2018 – The Head of the National Coordinating Committee on the Caribbean Court of Justice/Privy Council says efforts by the government to make the CCJ the country’s final court of appeal has stalled.
In 2016, government embarked on a massive public education campaign that included consultations on why the Caribbean Court should be the preferred choice as opposed to the London based Privy Council. But many were sceptical about government’s approach, among them Leader of the Opposition United Party, the Hon. Baldwin Spencer who highlighted the need for more public education campaign.
But despite an invitation to discuss the matter in-depth with the prime minister, Dr. Clarence Henry says Mr. Spencer is yet to respond.
Dr. Henry noted that it makes no sense spending large sums of money on public education campaigns on advancing a cause, when there isn’t full participation. He describes it as unfortunate.
