Wednesday 31st January, 2018 – Chief Medical Officer Dr. Rhonda Sealey-Thomas says she will support a ban on sugar sweetened beverages in schools if it is implemented in Antigua and Barbuda.

The consumption of sugary snacks and beverages by children and the effects it has on their health has engaged medical officials, many of whom are calling for such products to be made more difficult for children to obtain.

The CMO noted that the Ministry of Health will continue to focus on children, since unhealthy eating habits are adopted from an early age.

Whether or not a ban on sugary beverages will be imposed on schools in the country will ultimately be decided by the government, who is in receipt of a report as Health Minister Molwyn Joseph explains.
